An earthquake of 9.1 magnitudes hit Sumatra. It was a 50 m high tsunami. Around 230,000 people were killed and many buildings were damaged.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 caused the tsunami along the coast of Sanriku, Japan. At Shirahama the waves reached a height of 38.2 m damaging more than 11thousand homes and took the lives of more than 25,000 people. Another tsunami hit the east coast of China, killed 4000 people and destroyed the village.
